Seedlings

19/09/2007

Look out now for seedlings of next years biennial plants.

Now is the time for spotting and digging up seedlings of those valuable biennial plants , and transplanting them into pots, a nursery, or better still, a permanent position. I am looking for the furry leaves of little Salvia scleara Turkistanica plants growing in the fine gravel paths, and transferring them into their growing positions.I could put them into pots, but they seem to produce the healthiest plants when put into their flowering positions as soon as possible. Our soil is free draining sandy loam and suits the Salvias, as well as Lychnis coronaria 'Angels Blush',white with a pink eye,and best renewed every year like the Salvia. I have found one seedling to-day but need to find a few more.

I am a great fan of gravel, not least for its suitability for germinating seedlings. Of course, many of those are weeds but they are easily dealt with.
