Looking at Structure

15/12/2007

Looking at StructureNow is the time to look critically at the structure in your garden. This can be provided by trees and shrubs clipped into shapes, directing the eye and adding to the 'bones' of the garden. Evergreen bushes of Box, Yew and Holly clipped into shape, work very well, if slow growing, but look the same all year. This Beech tree was a seedling outgrowing its place here about 16yrs. ago, when we started to trim it, wobbling about on a ladder, using secateurs! Now it provides a firm support for the long ladder and our [once per 2wks.] brave gardener, wielding the hedge trimmer once a year in August. It has a strong shape in leaf, but the intricate pattern within the shape in winter is fantastic, particularly when backlit by a low sun. Look around for possibilities in your garden and have a go.
