Carex elata 'Aurea'

This sedge is one of my favourite grasses, looking like a ray of sunshine, with golden leaves faintly sriped green in early summer, for many months. The vertical inflorescenses are attractive in early May, while the new leaves are growing up...
It is lime green in full shade, but bright yellow in part shade and even full sun if there is sufficient moisture and will enjoy being in the wet edges of a pond. We find it does well in our well drained soil, but not in the very driest situations. I was cutting the clumps back to 6" clumps to-day [ Jan. 7th] with my wonderful Turkish Knife and saw the new leaves were already showing. If you want to split a clump do it in the spring, being careful to keep the split pieces of a reasonable size,or they will sulk for a few years. It is an easy, very hardy and effective grass.
